Sunset Beach
Lawn, sand, water, and sky
A visible shoreline where water and community meet
Cedar Lake’s South Beach occupies the southeast corner of Cedar Lake. It is the most visible of the lake’s three beaches, clearly seen from Cedar Lake Parkway and directly connected to surrounding trails and neighborhoods.
Heavily used in warmer months, South Beach serves both nearby residents and visitors from across the city. Its shaded open lawn, deep sand beach, and direct water access make it one of the park’s most welcoming shorelines.
Locally, South Beach is often referred to as Sunset Beach. The western view opens wide across the lake, and summer evenings bring long light and broad skies. It is one of the park’s most reliable places to watch the day end.
The beach is framed by open lawns on either side. The eastern lawn functions as a shaded gathering space with mature trees, while the western edge transitions toward woodland and shoreline.
There are plans to strengthen portions of the shoreline with enhanced plantings to improve habitat and filter runoff before it reaches the lake. Protecting tree canopy and stabilizing lawn areas helps reduce erosion along the slope to the water. The aim is to balance steady use with long-term lake health.
Recent improvements have clarified access and strengthened the sense of arrival. A seasonal comfort station provides restrooms and drinking water. Defined landings and stairs improve the connection from parkway to beach, and trail adjustments along Cedar Lake Parkway improve visibility and crossing safety.
South Beach remains intentionally simple: lawn, sand, water, and sky.
Its openness allows it to accommodate a busy summer afternoon or a quiet evening at sunset, while continuing to support both people and the lake.
