Where the journey matters as much as the destination
The North Shore is a narrow shoreline corridor within Cedar Lake Park. As part of the Cedar Lake Regional Trail, it connects Cedar Lake Parkway on the west to The Conservancy on the east.
Many people pass through on foot or by bike along the regional trail. Here, you can step off that line of travel and pause—taking a break from transit to notice the lake and shoreline more closely. This stretch is about the edge between land and water. Life concentrates here: in the shallows, along the banks, and in the trees that hold the soil in place.
At the west end, the path opens into a grove of cottonwoods and oaks planted years ago by Cedar Lake Park Association volunteers. The grade drops gently from the main trail toward the water, creating a subtle separation from the steady flow above. The lower ground feels more sheltered and closely tied to the lake—a smaller, more intimate space within the corridor. What began as small plantings now shapes the shoreline. Ongoing care—trash pickup, invasive removal, and soil protection—keeps the grove healthy and welcoming.
Moving east, the corridor narrows and informal shoreline access draws people toward the water. It is one of Cedar Lake’s most popular fishing areas. Some cast a line; others sit on a rock or pause at the edge. Even brief stops change the pace.
At the eastern end, the land rises to The Mound, a low glacial drumlin that serves as a natural lookout and gathering place. From here, views extend across the lake and skyline. Neighbors and volunteers help manage erosion, remove invasive species, and clean up trash so the area remains stable and usable.
The North Shore does not maintain itself. Volunteers plant and tend trees, remove buckthorn, pick up litter, and care for shoreline and gathering areas. Their steady work allows this narrow edge between city and lake to function as both corridor and destination.
Here, the journey and the place are connected.
